Minecraft Upcoming Update: Mounts of Mayhem

By Devan | November 16, 2025 | 7 min read
First Look : Spear and Nautilus | Minecraft LIVE - September 2025

The Mounts of Mayhem update is easily one of the most ambitious drops Mojang has planned for 2025, fundamentally changing how players move, fight, and explore both land and sea. With snapshot 25w41a now available, the update lets players test new mechanics that feel game-changing such as rideable aquatic creatures, undead mounts, and a weapon that brings real tactical depth. Whether you’re a builder, an explorer, or a fighter, it’s clear that this update is designed to shift the rhythm of survival in Minecraft, making the ocean more dangerous, the night more thrilling, and combat more strategic.

Release Date

Minecraft has not announced an exact release date for Mounts of Mayhem yet, although Minecraft Live confirmed that the update will arrive later this year. Since the calendar is already in November, the wait is likely only a few more months. Players are also looking at the previous winter game drop which arrived in early December, so many expect this update to release around a similar time.

Minecraft Mounts of Mayhem Features

There are plenty of awesome things to look forward to, from new rideable creatures to a tactical melee weapon and exciting upgrades.

Spears

A player holding a spear while riding a horse.

The spear is a new tiered weapon available in materials like wood, copper, iron, gold, diamond, and netherite. It has two attack modes: a quick “jab” and a “charge” attack. The charge’s damage depends on how fast you’re moving, making it great for mounting combat or hit-and-run tactics. There’s also an exclusive enchantment called Lunge. When you jab, it launches you forward, but using it wears down your spear’s durability.

Zombie Horse

A zombie holding a spear while riding a horse.

Zombie Horses now appear in survival mode, especially at night in plains and savanna biomes. They often come with a zombie rider who might be carrying a spear. If you kill the rider, the horse turns neutral and you can tame it. These undead mounts burn in daylight like other zombie mobs, but you can protect them by giving them horse armor. In a later snapshot, Netherite horse armor is now usable, making your mount much tougher.

Nautilus

A nautilus gliding through the ocean.

The nautilus is a new passive aquatic mob that spawns in all ocean biomes. You can tame it by feeding it a pufferfish or a bucket of pufferfish. Once tamed and saddled, it becomes a mount for underwater exploration, and riding it grants the Breath of the Nautilus effect so you don’t lose oxygen. Keep in mind that this does not refill your air bubbles, so if you're running low you’ll want to be near the surface before getting off. It also has a dash attack, which it uses if provoked or when you tell it to.

Nautilus Armor

A nautilus wearing sturdy netherite armor.

Nautilus armor works similarly to horse armor and includes confirmed versions for every resource tier up through diamond. You can find it as loot in shipwrecks, ocean ruins, and buried treasure. Diamond nautilus armor can also be upgraded to netherite by using a smithing table.

Zombie Nautilus

A zombie nautilus swimming through the water.

The zombie nautilus is the undead variant, usually appearing with a Drowned mob riding it while holding a trident. It behaves similarly to the regular nautilus, but it cannot be bred. Importantly, if you defeat the Drowned rider, the zombie nautilus becomes neutral and can be tamed just like the regular one.
